Lakefront lighting that respects the lake
Lakeway homes face two directions: toward the street and toward Lake Travis. The best landscape lighting Lakeway TX properties can have treats both views with care. From the street, a home in Flintrock Falls or Serene Hills wants a warm, layered look on the stone, the oaks and the entry. From the water or the patio, the goal is the opposite: enough light to use terraces, docks and stairs safely, with nothing bright enough to glare across the cove or wash out the view of the lake at night. Austin Landscape Lighting has worked on lakefront and hillside properties across 78734 and 78738, and this balance is the heart of every Lakeway design.
The housing stock ranges widely. The original Lakeway neighborhoods off Lohmans Crossing and Lakeway Boulevard date to the 1960s through 1980s, with ranch and contemporary homes under very mature live oaks on sloped lots. Rough Hollow, Serene Hills and Lakeway Highlands are newer, with large stone and stucco homes, pools and outdoor living spaces built for the view. Tuscan Village offers a lower-maintenance scale, and The Hills, Vineyard Bay and Costa Bella sit on steep, wooded terrain where every lot has a grade change.
Lakeway-specific design considerations
Deer define Lakeway. The city is famous for its herd, and fixtures on any lot will be walked around, nudged and occasionally stepped on. We use solid brass housings, bury wire deeper than code requires, and set path lights inside bed lines rather than along the lawn edge where deer travel. Lakeway also has outdoor lighting regulations that favor shielded, downward-directed fixtures, and HOAs in Rough Hollow, Flintrock Falls and The Hills have their own guidelines. We design with fully shielded fixtures and warm 2700K LEDs so a submission, if needed, is straightforward.
Limestone and slope are the next challenge. Many Lakeway lots are a few inches of soil over rock, with stone steps dropping from the house to a pool, a lower terrace or a dock path. Trench routes are planned during the consultation, long runs down the hill are sized so the lowest fixtures get full voltage, and step and path lighting is placed to make every grade change readable in the dark. On lakefront lots, we aim fixtures so no direct light reaches the water, which keeps the shoreline peaceful and keeps neighbors across the cove happy.
Services in demand around Lake Travis
- Garden and tree lighting for the mature live oaks of old Lakeway and The Hills, often as moonlighting from high in the canopy over terraces and drives.
- Pool and water feature lighting, because an outsized share of Lakeway homes have a pool or spa oriented toward the lake view.
- Path and walkway lighting for stone stairs, sloped walks and the long paths down to docks and lower terraces.
- Deck and patio lighting for the outdoor kitchens and covered terraces built for Lake Travis evenings.
Older systems are common in Lakeway too. Homes along Lohmans Crossing and Lakeway Drive frequently have 20-year-old halogen lighting, and our LED upgrade and retrofit service brings them back to life while cutting energy use by roughly 80 percent. Nearly every new system includes smart controls so the lakeside zones can dim or shut off independently of the street side.
How we work in Lakeway
Lakeway is about 35 to 40 minutes west of our Austin shop via RM 620 or SH 71, and the Lake Travis corridor is one of our core service areas. We begin with a free on-site design consultation, preferably at dusk, walk the property from the street to the water, and provide a written estimate with no surprises. Most residential installations are completed in one day, with larger lakefront estates sometimes taking two. All systems are 12-volt low-voltage LED with brass and copper fixtures, which are safe around pool decks, docks and kids and weather beautifully in the lake air.
Austin Landscape Lighting is locally owned, established in 2020, licensed and insured, with 500+ completed projects and a 4.9-star rating across 127 Google reviews. Workmanship is covered for two years in addition to manufacturer fixture warranties. Our maintenance and repair service also covers systems installed by others, which comes up often in Lakeway's older neighborhoods.

Landscape lighting in Lakeway: FAQ
Can you light a Lake Travis waterfront lot without creating glare on the water?
Yes. On lakefront properties in Rough Hollow, Vineyard Bay, Costa Bella and old Lakeway we use fully shielded fixtures aimed at the house, trees, steps and terraces, never toward the water. Light stays low and warm, which keeps the view of the lake intact and avoids bothering neighbors across the cove. Dock paths and stairs are lit for safety with small step and path fixtures rather than floods.
Lakeway has a large deer population. How do you protect the fixtures?
We assume deer will walk through every Lakeway yard nightly. Fixtures are solid brass rather than aluminum or plastic, wire is buried deeper than the minimum, and path lights are set slightly inside planting beds instead of along the lawn edge where deer travel. Tree-mounted downlights are out of reach entirely. If a fixture is knocked out of aim, we reset it on maintenance visits.
Does Lakeway have lighting rules I need to follow?
Lakeway has outdoor lighting regulations that favor shielded, downward-directed fixtures, and many HOAs, including Rough Hollow, Flintrock Falls and The Hills, publish their own exterior guidelines. Low-voltage landscape lighting with fully shielded fixtures and warm white LEDs, which is what we install, fits these expectations. We can provide a fixture plan with shielding details for any required review.
My home in old Lakeway has a halogen system from the early 2000s. Can it be upgraded?
Usually, yes. Many homes along Lohmans Crossing, Lakeway Drive and Lakeway Boulevard still run halogen systems with failing bulbs and overworked transformers. We evaluate the existing wire and fixtures, retrofit LED lamps into sound brass fixtures, replace corroded ones, and re-aim everything. The upgraded system uses about 80 percent less power and often adds smart control for the first time.
